What
Refers to the âsomethingâ that is going to be expected. In this example the âsomethingâ is a project plan. Being specific, however, Mary will only be providing the first draft of the Phase 1 project plan. Until now, the customer may have assumed that the project plan was going to be for the both Phase 1 and Phase 2.
When
Refers to the time and date when the expectation will be fulfilled. In our example, the deadline is cited as next Friday but the intent was to mean the Friday after that, being Friday, February 7that 3:00pm EDT (remember to be specific about time and time zone). Failing to specify the exact time and date is a common cause of misaligned expectations.
